Frown

'Frown' on UREI 527-A

For this trial we returned the faders to zero and proceeded to carve a small frown going from 250 to 500Hz. Our accuracy in positioning faders depended in no small part on our ability to read front face silk-screening. Specified settings are 250Hz down 10dB, 315Hz down 5dB, 400Hz down 5dB and 500H down 10dB. In the photo you can see the 'Frown' demoed on one of the vintage UREI 527-A EQs whose silk-screened marks match the demands perfectly.

A few notes: The UREI 527A #167 shows only the 250Hz fader in action. The other three aren't operational.

It appears in my haste I set the Frown up on the AB 231 a third of an octave off. Steve Snyder calls this 'Off-World' -- that phenomenon when you are one off from where you should have been. At least this time it's fairly easy to imagine the results shifted up a third of an octave! Ever get to channel 48 on the snake and you're looking at channel 47 on the console? Is it just me?

Check out the non-frown 'Frown' trace of the Presonus in three out of four modes. Interesting.

When assessing performance with these screenshots one thing to look for is to see how much cut takes place at 250Hz and 500Hz. Do the neighboring filters add to or take away from the -10dB setting? Also, check out the middle of the frown. Is it more or less than -5dB?
